Mojaffor Hossain

Is a well-known fiction writer and literary critic of contemporary Bangla literature. After completing his Honours and Master’s in English from Rajshahi University, he started his career as a journalist. Currently he is working as translator at the Bangla Academy, Dhaka. He has published eight anthologies of short stories from Dhaka and Kolkata. He uses native realities but often gives them magic-realistic or surrealistic colours. His debut novel, Timiryatra, has received a prestigious award namely Kali O Kalam Literary Award (2019). For his short fiction, he has received the Anyadin Humayun Ahmed Award (2017), the Abul Hasan Sahitya Award (2018), Arani Sahitya Award (2012) and the Boishakhi Television Award (2013). For non-fiction, he has been awarded with Brac Bank Samakal Sahitya Award and Protiva Prokash Sahitya Award.

Early life

Mojaffor Hossain was born on 9 April 1966 in Shalika village of Meherpur district. His father's name was Aoulad Hossain and his mother's was Monowara Begum. Both parents are deceased now. He got married to Taisu Sara Tabassum Mati in 2011. Together they have two children named Galpa and Gadya.

Education Life

Mojaffor started his education from Shalika Government Primary School in the village. H completed his secondary education from Meherpur Government High School in the year of 2002 and higher secondary from Kushtia Police Lines School and College in 2006. He later completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in English Language and Literature from the University of Rajshahi.

Career

He started his career as a journalist in 2012 from DhakaReport24.com. In 2013, he joined Anannya, the only fortnightly women's magazine in the country, and worked as the executive editor of the magazine till 2016. He then joined the editing department of the online news portal the Paribartan.com. In May 2016, he joined Bangla Academy, the national institute of Arts and Letters, as a translator. Currently he is working there.

Literary Life

Mojaffor Hossain started writing from very early of his life. After the death of his mother in 2002, he left his district town and went to Kushtia to pursue higher studies. During this time he became involved with various literary organizations in Kushtia and retreated from education for two years. At that time he was co-editor of the literary magazine "Adrahadai" published from Kushtia. He used to write poems regularly in the local literary pages and magazines. After being admitted to Rajshahi University in 2006, a literary magazine called 'Shaswatiki' was published under his initiative. He was the editor of the magazine. It became famous nationally. Through Shaswatiki he was able to identify himself as a serious literary editor. Since then he left poetry and started writing short fictions and as well as translating prose from English to Bangla. His first story book, Dwidha, was published in 2011. The book was co-authored by his university friend Ratul Pal. From then on, Mojaffor's short stories, translations and essays began to get published in various pamphlets, literary pages of national dailies and literary magazines. His stories took place in various collections and anthologies published from both Bangladesh and Kolkata, India. His play 'Death of a Writer' was staged by S Theatre of Rajshahi University. In 2012, Ratri Prakashani published his second story collection. On the flap of the book, the renowned author of Bangla Language Hasan Azizul Haq labeled his story as 'new style'. The story 'Resurrection' of the book was awarded the Arani Short Story Award-2013 and the story titled 'Media vs Nobody' was awarded the 'Baishakhi Television Tomar Golpe Sabar Eid-2013' Award. Renowned playwright Badrul Anam Saud made a television drama of the story. In 2016, Behula Bangla published his third story collection, 'Atit Ekta Vindesh'. This book won the Exim Bank-Anyadin Humayun Ahmed Fiction Award 2018. Mojaffor has published around 26 books till 2022.
